Privacy Policy

Account: your email address, a password (stored hashed by our auth provider), your chosen display name and handle, and your roles and reading progress. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from Google — nothing more — and we never see your Google password.

If you sign in with Google: we receive exactly three things — your name, used to address you and attribute your contributions; your email address, used to identify your account and contact you about your submissions; and your profile picture, shown on your contributor profile. That is the whole of it. We do not request or receive access to your Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, or any other Google service; we never post, send, or create anything on your behalf; and we do not sell or share this data with third parties. You can revoke Akala's access at any time from your Google account permissions, and ask us to delete your account and personal data through the collaborate page.

Contributions: whatever you choose to publish — annotations, submissions, artefacts, comments, votes, corpus sentences, game plays (name and score only).

Donations: the details you give on a donation claim — name, the email you paid with, business, message, image, and the payment reference. Card details never touch this site; payment is handled entirely by Selar.

Enquiries: what you send through the collaborate form.

We run no advertising trackers and no third-party analytics cookies. The only cookies/local storage we use keep you signed in and remember local things like reading progress and your game name.

Akala is a public archive. Your handle or display name, your published contributions, your rank, and — if you donate and claim a tier — your donor-wall entry (name, and at the tiers that include them, picture, business, and message) are public. Your email is never public: not on the wall, not on contributions, not through the API — donation and enquiry emails are readable only by the editors who need them to respond or to verify a payment.

To run the service: sign you in, attribute your work, show the walls, review the queues, confirm donations, and reply to enquiries. Published contributions become part of the open codex and its exportable datasets under the licence in the Terms — that is the project's stated purpose, not a hidden use.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not share it with advertisers. Full stop.

Like most sites, we stand on infrastructure providers who process data on our behalf: Supabase (database, authentication, and file storage — hosted in the EU, eu-west-1), Vercel (hosting and request logs), Google (only if you choose Google sign-in), and Selar (donation payments, under their own privacy policy). Each receives only what its role requires.

Account data is kept while your account exists. You may ask us to delete your account; personal data (email, private details) is then removed. Published contributions remain in the codex — they are part of a collective record, licensed for it — but on request we will detach your name and re-attribute them to “a contributor of the oha”. Donation records are kept as long as financial record-keeping requires.

You may access, correct, or request deletion of your personal data, and object to a use of it, subject to the Nigeria Data Protection Act and, where it applies, the GDPR. Reach us through the collaborate page — every message is read.

Akala is a general-audience literary and cultural archive. Accounts are intended for people 13 and older; if we learn a younger child has created an account, we will remove it.

If this policy changes materially, the new version is posted here with a new effective date. We will never change the core promise quietly: your data is not for sale.
